Campaign Urges US Congress to Uphold Privacy Rights

On Wednesday, 60 organisations involved in cryptocurrency, open source software and privacy preservation launched a new campaign urging the 118th US Congress to protect privacy. The coalition, led by Fight For the Future, Electric Coin Co. and The Tor Project, demand Congress create policies that uphold privacy.

Organizations Call for Bold Pro-Privacy Policies

60 organisations have launched a campaign under the slogan “Tell Congress to Uphold Privacy”. They are asking legislators to take action to protect privacy rights of Americans both online and offline. Among them are Fight For the Future, Blockchain Association, Proton, Tor Project, Mobilecoin, Protocol Labs, Filecoin Foundation, Electric Coin Co., Defi Education Fund and Tutanota. The initiative follows Fight For the Future’s open letter to Congress, which declared that privacy is a fundamental human right.

“Protecting the privacy of ordinary people is essential to ensuring security, autonomy, press freedom and other rights that are at the core of democracy,” the website reads. “We applaud the current interest in strong federal data privacy regulations to strengthen these rights. Privacy-focused technologies and software designed to protect privacy by design are equally important. Such tools allow users to protect themselves from a range of harm, including bullying, discrimination and abuse by authoritarian regimes.”

The campaign website provides users with a way to reach out to Congress and identify privacy-enhancing and privacy-focused technologies. It states, “Contact Congress now to demand they uphold our right to privacy.” A full list of all organizations involved in the campaign is also available on the website. Isabela Fernandes, Director of Government for the Tor Project said in a statement, “The mission of the Tor Project is to advance human rights through the creation and deployment of free and open source privacy and anonymity technologies. We are co-signing on this effort because we believe that everyone, especially elected representatives, should stand up for privacy.”

Paul Brigner, Head of US Policy and Strategic Advocacy at Electric Coin Co., said, “Electric Coin Co. has fully joined this global call for incoming US lawmakers to stand up for privacy.” Electric Coin Co. is the privacy-focused crypto project being led by the developers of Zcash. He continued, “We urge legislators to embrace a strong stance for privacy policies that include end-to-end encryption and support privacy-preserving tools. Only by protecting the privacy rights of all individuals can we build a democratic, free society.”
