Btcpay Introduces Coinjoin Plugin to Strengthen Bitcoin Privacy for Merchants

On Monday, the open source bitcoin payment processor Btcpay unveiled a new plugin for the Btcpay server. The plugin implements Wasabi Wallet’s Wabisabi Protocol for coin-merging coordination, allowing merchants to experience increased privacy when dealing with bitcoin.

Btcpay Server Plugin Aims to Enhance Bitcoin Privacy

In response to an announcement from privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet platform Wasabi wallet and payment processor for bitcoin payments btcpay, merchants now have the capability to obscure their incoming and outgoing Bitcoin (BTC) transactions.

The new plugin is a great addition to the Btcpay server, designed by Andrew Camilleri and based on Wasabi Wallet’s Wabisabi Protocol for coin-merging coordination. The Btcpay plugin scheme “protects the privacy of all of your incoming and outgoing transactions by preventing sensitive details about your store’s payment history from leaking to outside parties,” Wasabi explained in a press release to Bitcoin.com News.

“Btcpay Server was created to empower individuals and businesses to take back their financial sovereignty,” said Kukks, the developer of the Btcpay Coinjoin Plugin. “The Wasabi Wallet team and I are proud to provide even more privacy protection with this new coinjoin feature. I believe that financial privacy is a fundamental human right, this feature is my contribution to that cause.”

This is not the only collaboration between Btcpay and Wasabi. The privacy-enhancing coin-merging technology was developed by Wasabi. In September 2020, Trezor announced that it would add a coinjoin implementation to the firm’s hardware wallet.

“It made sense to include an optional coin join plugin with the most advanced privacy enhancement tool for bitcoin,” said Max Hillebrand, Wasabi Wallet Contributor and Zksnacks CEO. “As a coinjoin protocol, Wabisabi has been designed with merchants in mind, allowing payments within a coinjoin and optimizing the usage of block space to save on fees.”

Btcpay merchants can use the coinjoin feature with a liquid coordinator provided by Zksnacks, the firm behind Wasabi Wallet. Additionally, Btcpay Server Administrators have the option to set up their own coinjoin coordinators using their own terms if they don’t wish to use the existing one.
