Crypto Hacks and Scams Rise 150% in Q3 of 2023, Immunefi Reports

The crypto and web3 project attacks increased by 153% in the third quarter of 2023, according to the report of Blockchain Security Platform Immunefi. This number was 30 in the same period of 2022. Consequently, 76 victims suffered a loss of nearly $686 million.

The most outstanding case was Mixin Hacking, which stole about $200 million. In addition, Multichain’s attack resulted in the loss of over $126 million.

The most notorious attacker of Q3 2023 was Cryptojacker, which stole more than $208 million in cryptocurrencies. The Lazarus Group was responsible for 30% of all stolen crypto.

According to Immunefi, only 3.3% of all losses were due to scams such as rug pulling. In comparison to Q2 of 2022, 23.9% of the funds were lost through rug pulls or scams.

Hackers focused their efforts on DeFi protocols, accounting for 73% of all losses, while centralised services made up the remaining 27%. Ethereum projects were their primary targets, with 42.7%, followed by BNBChain, with 30.6%.

Overall, the third quarter of 2023 has been the worst quarter for crypto scams and hacks.
