But First, let’s give a brief overview. I’m Alex Van de Sande and I’m the Designer at the Ethereum Foundation. At DevconOne, I gave a talk entitled “The blockchain versus the average user” where I discussed in more detail the challenges involved when bringing the Ethereum Ecosystem to the “Average User”. This is because it can be difficult to define who that is. When personal computers were advertised as “for the rest of us”, they weren’t targeting the audience they wanted to reach. Let’s stop talking and get to work. Ethereum! I’m biased, but I think this is the best place to start. Ethereum Wallet is a cross-platform application that enables you to send ether and ethereum-based coins, as well as build and execute contracts.

First, create an ethereum account. All you need is a secure password to access your account. To do anything, you will need some ether. Don’t worry, it’s not much. Most contracts will cost you less than a tenth of a US penny. If you’re just testing, we recommend switching to testnet. Go to the menu develop > network > testnet (morden) and then develop > start mining. After a while, you should be able to do any test you want.

We’ll discuss this more in the future. But for now, I’d like to thank you for reading. I’ve included some more resources below that can help you get started on the Ethereum platform.

Creating a cryptocurrency without writing a single line of code is now possible thanks to the btcrelay project. This makes it fraud-proof and soon, quick exchanges between bitcoin and Ethereum will be available without the need for any third parties.

To begin, you need to create a contract. Tokens are fungible, tradeable assets which feature the same basic features. This means that your token will be compatible with the Ethereum wallet or any client that adheres to the same standards.

Go to the Contracts page and click on “implement new contract”. You will need to copy the code identifier and paste it into the “Solidity Source field”. If the code compiles correctly, you will see a dropdown menu on the left. From here, you can select the “MyToken” contract and modify the parameters in the right column.

Once you have set these, you can scroll down to view the price estimate and payment options. Any extra ether that you don’t use will be returned to you. Once you have set the parameters, press “implement” and wait for the transaction to complete. Enter your password and click “Submit”.

You will be redirected back to the main page. Here, you can view your transaction while it awaits confirmation. Your account is also known as “Etherbase” and you should now be able to see 100% of the shares you just created. To send some to friends, choose “send”, select the coin that you wish to send, paste your friend’s address in the “to” field and press “send”.

You can also email it to friends, but your wallet will not be visible. The wallet can only keep track of tokens that it is aware of, so you will have to manually add them. To do this, visit the “Contracts” tab and click on the link to access the contract you have just created. Click it to go to its page and then copy the contract address and paste it into a text editor.

Below this, you can click on “View Token” and paste your contract address into the pop up window. The token name, symbol, decimal number and symbol should all be automatically filled. However, you can fill it in however you wish. Once you have done this, you will be able to see all the balances of your token.

Tokens are very useful for exchanging value in local communities, keeping track of how many hours worked in loyalty programs, and making a coin usable to make it intrinsically valuable. Tomorrow, we’ll demonstrate how tokens allow you to vote in collective decisions about the use and allocation of funds. For more information, visit the Democratic Autonomous Organization.
