The beauty queen Alejandra Guajardo paraded across the stage at the Miss Universe 2022 preliminary competition representing El Salvador in a costume inspired by Bitcoin (BTC).
In a post on Instagram that tagged Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, Guajardo is seen sporting a large colón, El Salvador’s currency until 2001, on her back adorned with beads and cocoa. In her right hand, she carried a cane topped with a big physical Bitcoin.
The announcer of the pageant said, “This look represents the history of the currency of El Salvador. For a long time, cocoa was used, and then the colon, until it was replaced by the US dollar. In 2021, El Salvador became the first country in the world to use Bitcoin as legal tender. You don’t even need a girdle to look like cash.”
The costume was created by plastic artist Francisco Guerrero, featuring a BTC coin in the front, likely symbolizing the currency’s future in El Salvador. It is unclear if the government or President Bukele had any involvement in promoting the cryptocurrency to a global audience. Bukele frequently tweeted about BTC purchases after El Salvador adopted the crypto-asset as legal tender in September 2021.
Each of the 84 contestants competing in Miss Universe 2022 will be evaluated in the preliminary competition, and 16 will move on to the semi-finals.
The show of BTC-themed fashion came after the El Salvador legislature approved a bill to provide a framework for Bitcoin-backed bonds. Pro-crypto lawmakers have proposed using such bonds to pay off sovereign debt and fund the building of a volcano-powered Bitcoin City.
Cointelegraph attempted to contact Francisco Guerrero for comment but did not receive a response by press time.
