Applications Open For Ethereum Scholarship Program: Celebration of Cohort #1

Published:

Ethereum Is a living being. Yes, its core comprises a Virtual Machine (the EVM) that performs calculations and creates a new state block by block. But the power of Ethereum lies in its ability to connect millions of people, even though they may have nothing in common, through a common protocol and the internet. Developers, bankers, politicians, students, lawyers, and artists all rely on these resources. Ethereum is a vibrant ecosystem that creates trust networks for the public good.

As Ethereum expands its reach, we are looking to bridge the gap between different economic classes, cultures, and nationalities to reach the next billion. This is why we launched our Scholarship Program last year.

Call To Applications For Cohort #2 Is Out Now!

Today, we are delighted to announce that applications for the second cohort of the program are open. We are searching for leaders who are committed to making a difference and inspiring others. The 6-month program is focused on empowering talented individuals to make Ethereum more relevant and to remove barriers to entry for underrepresented communities who will be the future of web3.

Highlighting Cohort #1

As applications for the second cohort open, we’d like to take a moment to celebrate the success of our previous four fellows.

Benson Njuguna of Acre Africa helped implement Ethereum-based crop insurance solutions for smallholder farmers in Kenya. Benson and his team were able to cut the time taken to process insurance payments from months to days, and last year, more than 17,000 farmers signed up – many of whom received payments after bad weather within days. Chuy Cepeda of Operating System City created a Spanish-language Ethereum wallet app that citizens can use for government-issued IDs or document storage and display. He and his team are working with governments in Latin America to train public sector leaders to use blockchain technology to combat corruption and bureaucracy. Read his recent update here.

Naroa Zurutuza of Jig is exploring the role Ethereum can play in the UN effort to connect all schools to the internet. Her team launched a fundraising campaign for NFTs, and they are also working with government offices in Africa to get school connectivity funded using Ethereum staking. Giga is building a platform that uses smart contracts to monitor and manage connectivity.

Kuldeep Aryal of BRAC, one of the world’s most important NGOs, educated leaders on blockchain and visited various programs and country offices to assess the needs that blockchain can address. Kuldeep conceived the idea of a blockchain-based beneficiary ID system that can be used across all BRAC services.

Watch out for more blogs from these fellows in the coming weeks!

If you believe you can make a real-world impact, apply for the second cohort of the Scholarship Program before July 24, 2022!
