Temasek Unwilling to Invest in Crypto Firms: Reasons Explained

Temasek Holdings Limited’s Chief Investment Officer, Rohit Sipahimalani, has stated that the current environment is not suitable for investing in crypto companies due to the regulatory uncertainty. He elaborated further during an interview with CNBC this morning:

“There’s a lot of regulatory uncertainty in this environment. We would not be comfortable investing in exchanges given the way things are right now.”

The Securities and Exchange Commission has recently taken legal action against Ripple, Coinbase, and Binance for violating U.S. securities laws.

Temasek Holdings Limited has recently reported their worst returns since 2016. Sipahimalani does not completely shut out the possibility of investing in crypto firms, but only under the right conditions.

“If you have the right regulatory framework, and we’re comfortable with, and you have the right investment opportunity, there’s no reason for us not to look at it.”

The investment firm wrote down their full investment in FTX to “zero” last November, with a total portfolio net value of approximately $287 million.

In summary, Temasek Holdings Limited is open to investing in crypto firms, but only when the regulatory environment is more favourable.
